Continuity Editing

In our lesson we looked at continuity editing, this is where a scene has been filmed to make it look as if the scene has been filmed continuously. We the watched this interrogation scene from LA Confidential to help to understand what continuity editing is. At the beginning of the scene the camera follows the two police officer, this makes the audience like them as they see the storyline from their point of view. The audience like the police officer even though they are beating up the other character. As the scene carries on the it starts to get faster, this is creating tension. This is like in the film Jaws which the scene and sound get faster as the shark is attacking to create tension in the audience. In Jaws it also does close up of the man face to show his emotion as he what is happening when the shark is attacking.

Editing in a Scene

Editing

During Thursdays lesson, we learned about editing in a scene. We learned about how it is edited to make the audience feel as if they are in the scene and how the different scenes link together. Quick jump cuts create a fast paced scene. For example in the car chase from Bourne Supremacy, which we watched in the lesson, has jump cut to make the car chase fast paced. The fast paced is to create tension.

This is also similar in the film Lucy, it is quick paced and it creates tension in the scene of the car chase.

Camera Shots

Camera shots

In Class we discuss the different camera shots there were. Different camera shots are; extreme close up, big close up, close up, medium close up, media shot, medium long shot, long shot, establishing shot, high angle shot. low angle shot, birds eye view, dutch angle, eye level shot and reverse angle.

We then watched this clip from Superman Returns film from 2006 and had to identify what angle shot were used. The clip used high angle shot, this was at the beginning where the man was looking up the stairs this was to show fear at what he was looking at. There was also a big close up of Superman when the bullet hits his eye and it bounced back off his eye, this was to create tension. Also there was close up shot of a man looking over a gun about to shot at the police, this shows he is the baddie and it make the audience feel like he is looking at them as if they were in the film. Another close up shot is when the man shoots superman in the eye and it bounced back it shows the emotion in his face wondering what he should do now.

Theses links show different types of medias, for example the BBFC puts age ratings on film as the guardian is a newspaper telling their audience what is happening with the media.
