In our lesson we looked at Bloody Cuts. They have been producing a short horror film called The Outer Darkness. We watched a short video of scream to script Episode 1: Pre-Production in our lesson:
There is also more episodes below: Episode 2: Collaboration
In the lesson we watched three title sequences and then on a scale we had to put what the sequence had made us feel what the film was about from just seeing the title sequences. Below is the title sequences we watched and a picture of the scales.
The first title sequence we watched was Seven:
The second title sequence we watched was Dinner for Schmucks:
Last Thursday we presented our main task pitches in class of what we were going to do. This include a synopsis/brief, mood board, cast, location and treatment. Below is mine and Sophie pitch:
Two weeks ago we went and visited the BFI (British Film Institute). The director Corin Hardy came and talked to us about his new film The Hallow. He told us about the process it took to produce the film and showed us some of the storyboards he had done for the film. Below is the trailer to The Hallow and a link to the director Corin Hardy.
In last weeks lesson, we were told about the main task that we will have to do for the course. In this task we will have to show what we have learned this year so far such as sound, camera shot and types of editing. When there is an idea of what to do for the task we will have to write a script, draw out a story board, find out characters and costume and props and location, what type of sound we will add in and the the camera shots and angles that we will use. Below is a description of what we have to do:
Below is are preliminary task produced by me, Sophie and Cleo. It is a short video between our actors Ricky and James discussing the homework that one of them has forgotten. Camera shot we have used are panning of James walking to his seat, 180 degree rule and zoom. Instead of using the zoom next time it would be better to use a dolly shot and planned the angle better between the conversation.
This is a video on the Introduction of Foley and Sound Effects. In this video it involves the history of Foley, how some sound effects are created and the names of types of sound effects.
Before the half term we were given a camera and a tripod. We were taught how to use this equipment and how to use it for different camera angles and shots. Next we had to find the location to film, get people to be in the video, draw a story board, write a script, to make sure we had the correct props and to check the equipment was working. We then had to film someone walking through a door, sitting down then having a conversation. During the lesson we were told to leave time while filming and not start filming as soon as the person was walking or talking as it wouldn't leave enough space to be able to edit. We had also been told to film the shot more than once, this had been because if there had been something wrong we would have the other clip to use just in case. After we had done this we were then ready to edit it after the half term.
In our lesson we looked at continuity editing, this is where a scene has been filmed to make it look as if the scene has been filmed continuously. We the watched this interrogation scene from LA Confidential to help to understand what continuity editing is. At the beginning of the scene the camera follows the two police officer, this makes the audience like them as they see the storyline from their point of view. The audience like the police officer even though they are beating up the other character. As the scene carries on the it starts to get faster, this is creating tension. This is like in the film Jaws which the scene and sound get faster as the shark is attacking to create tension in the audience. In Jaws it also does close up of the man face to show his emotion as he what is happening when the shark is attacking.
In our lesson on Thursday we took photos of each other to learn about the different camera shot. There are various different camera shots, long shot, medium long shot, close up, extreme close up, big close up, dutch angle, bird eye view, high angle shot, eye level shot, reverse angle shot, long angle shot and more. You can see examples of theses in the presentation below.
During Thursdays lesson, we learned about editing in a scene. We learned about how it is edited to make the audience feel as if they are in the scene and how the different scenes link together. Quick jump cuts create a fast paced scene. For example in the car chase from Bourne Supremacy, which we watched in the lesson, has jump cut to make the car chase fast paced. The fast paced is to create tension.
This is also similar in the film Lucy, it is quick paced and it creates tension in the scene of the car chase.
In Class we discuss the different camera shots there were. Different camera shots are; extreme close up, big close up, close up, medium close up, media shot, medium long shot, long shot, establishing shot, high angle shot. low angle shot, birds eye view, dutch angle, eye level shot and reverse angle.
We then watched this clip from Superman Returns film from 2006 and had to identify what angle shot were used. The clip used high angle shot, this was at the beginning where the man was looking up the stairs this was to show fear at what he was looking at. There was also a big close up of Superman when the bullet hits his eye and it bounced back off his eye, this was to create tension. Also there was close up shot of a man looking over a gun about to shot at the police, this shows he is the baddie and it make the audience feel like he is looking at them as if they were in the film. Another close up shot is when the man shoots superman in the eye and it bounced back it shows the emotion in his face wondering what he should do now.
